Are you considering following a surrogacy journey in Ontario? If the answer is yes, before starting your surrogate search, you need to do some homework and determine if this third-party reproduction technique is the right option for you and your family.
Is Surrogacy The Right Choice For You?
Surrogacy in Ontario can be a very fulfilling but also challenging journey, full of up and downs, that will last at least one year of your life, this is the reason why before starting the process you need to know how surrogacy works, pros and cons, and also the regulations that apply to your personal situation.
The best way to learn about this process is to talk with a surrogacy attorney that will guide and give you legal advice, also you can chat with other intended parents, and why not former surrogates. Once you have done this first investigation, and you think you are ready to start your journey, the next step is to decide what type of surrogacy would you like to do, this will have an impact in the type of surrogate you will need. What Are The Different Types Of Surrogacy?
There are two main types of surrogacy in Canada, traditional surrogacy, and gestational surrogacy. The key difference between these two forms of surrogacy is the genetic link between the baby and the surrogate. In a traditional process, the surrogate’s egg will be used to create the embryos, so there will be a genetic link between her and the baby. This is not the case in gestational surrogacy, as the eggs come from the intended mother or an egg donor.
Nowadays, in Ontario, is more common gestational surrogacy because from a legal point of view is easier if there is no genetic connection between the baby and the surrogate. Said that traditional surrogacy is also an option, and it’s totally legal. A gestational surrogate is also called a gestational carrier. In some countries, like the US, compensated surrogacy is allowed, however in Canada, only altruistic processes are permitted, so surrogate cannot be paid to become a surrogate.
Once you have clear, what type of process you want to follow, the next step is to locate a surrogate, probably this will be one of the most important phases of your journey. It’s important to find a match who share similar expectations and goals, so it would be useful to think about if before selecting someone.
How To Find A Surrogate?
In Canada, you can find a surrogate using an agency, if you opt for a surrogacy assisted process, but also you can ask your lawyer and your fertility clinic if you don’t want to pay an agency. If you decide to pursue an independent surrogacy in Canada, you also can create surrogacy classifieds and join Facebook groups, or even discuss openly with your family and friends, sometimes a relive or a close friend can offer to be your surrogate.
Final Thoughts
Finding a surrogate can be a long process because in Canada there are more prospective parents than surrogates, so don’t rush and take your time. This process will last at least twelve months, so you need to be sure you pick the right woman to carry your baby. Good Luck
The story of couple of intended parents looking for a surrogate mother. The first day we heard of surrogacy, we knew that one day, becoming a parent would no longer just be a dream, but also a reality. We are so grateful to all these women out there who are willing to help couples build their family and we can´t wait to meet our very special person. Being parents has changed us in a way we couldn’t have foreseen. The love we have for our daughter has lifted and fulfilled our lives in a way that makes us wonder how we ever lived without her. Coming from loving families, we knew we wanted to be parents from the outset but actually living through this experience is a completely different story. Our goal had always been a family of four, we’re almost there, and need your help to make our dream come true. We’ve been in a loving relationship for twelve years, married for eight, and are blessed to have strong family ties. In 2014, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter via Gestational Surrogacy. Sadly, our previous surrogate mother is no longer able to carry children as we would have otherwise worked with her again in a heartbeat! Having been through a Surro journey, we now have a keen understanding of the process and have an excellent care team ready and in place. In our situation, both of our sisters generously donated eggs which were cross fertilized so the embryos are genetically tied to both sides of our family. The remaining embryos are ready for a transfer at any time. We’ve also counselled other couples who wished to use the process in creating their families, which has been our way of paying forward the excellent advice and counsel we received from our network. We would love to share our experience with you if had any questions about the process.
Being cognizant of the intricacies involved in a possible ongoing relationship, we also understand and respect if your preference was to isolate the arrangement as simply one of altruistic assistance. While we maintain a great relationship with our previous Surro Mom, her preference was to maintain distance after the birth, in order to not confuse her family and our daughter. In short, we truly appreciate the gift a surro mothers offers, and happily respect your preference. In our minds the process of choosing a surrogate or intended parents is neither a transaction nor a one way conversation but rather something more personal where both parties have the opportunity to get to know each other first before making any decisions. We feel it’s important for IP’s and their surrogate have things in common, after all one can only talk about pregnancy for so long: In this vein and in addition to weighing the pros and cons – a decision like this also has to ‘feel right’ for everyone involved. We would love to find a surrogate we can connect with! |
